{"id":54,"date":"2015-07-11T14:33:43","date_gmt":"2015-07-11T14:33:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.arqbackup.com\/blog\/?p=54"},"modified":"2019-01-22T13:15:50","modified_gmt":"2019-01-22T13:15:50","slug":"iam-and-arq","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.arqbackup.com\/blog\/iam-and-arq\/","title":{"rendered":"IAM and Arq"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>If you&#8217;re backing up to Amazon Web Services with Arq, you&#8217;ll need a &#8220;key pair&#8221; consisting of an &#8220;access key ID&#8221; (the public key, like a username) and a &#8220;secret access key&#8221; (the private key, like a password).<\/p>\n<p>You could create a root key pair with permission for everything, but AWS prefers that you create an IAM user with restricted permissions and use its key pair.<\/p>\n<h2>Using IAM with Arq<\/h2>\n<p>To create an&nbsp;IAM user, follow the steps shown in our video:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"500\" height=\"375\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/tsIf3ofLymA?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Now that you&#8217;ve created the&nbsp;key pair for your new IAM &#8220;administrator&#8221; user, use it to configure&nbsp;Arq.<\/p>\n<h2>Configuring Arq with IAM<\/h2>\n<p>If you&#8217;re setting up Arq for the first time, choose &#8220;Amazon (S3 and Glacier)&#8221; for the destination type and paste your key pair into the fields:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arqbackup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/aws-enter-key-pair.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-55\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arqbackup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/aws-enter-key-pair.png\" alt=\"Enter AWS Key Pair\" width=\"549\" height=\"344\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If you&#8217;ve already set up Arq and want to add AWS as a destination, go to Arq&#8217;s preferences, Destinations tab, click the + button, choose &#8220;Amazon (S3 and Glacier)&#8221; for the destination type and paste your key pair into the fields.<\/p>\n<h2>Create Restricted IAM User<\/h2>\n<p>Now Arq has an &#8220;admin&#8221; IAM user for accessing your AWS account.&nbsp;With it, Arq can find all Arq backups in your AWS account. This is useful if, for example, you&#8217;re backing up multiple computers and want to see the other computers&#8217; backup records.<\/p>\n<p>But if&nbsp;you&#8217;d rather restrict Arq on this computer to only access its own data, you can&nbsp;instruct Arq to automatically create an IAM user with just enough permission to do its job.<\/p>\n<p>Go to Arq&#8217;s preferences, Destinations tab, and double-click your AWS destination. Then click &#8220;Create Restricted IAM User&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.arqbackup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/create-restricted-iam-user.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-56\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arqbackup.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/07\/create-restricted-iam-user.png\" alt=\"create restricted IAM user\" width=\"789\" height=\"531\"><\/a>Arq will automatically create a key pair for a new IAM user with just enough permission to read\/write this computer&#8217;s backup data. Arq&nbsp;will&nbsp;use this new IAM user&#8217;s key pair from now on.
